If you earn in dollars, receive freelance payments, or want to protect your savings from naira devaluation, a dollar account is not optional anymore. I tested the four biggest apps — Grey, Geegpay, Vance, and Chipper Cash — with real money over four months. Here is the full breakdown.
Grey is the best all-round dollar account for most Nigerians. Geegpay wins on unlimited free withdrawals, Vance has the nicest interface, and Chipper Cash is the weakest of the four — fine for casual use, not for anyone serious about receiving money regularly.
| App | USD Account | Free Withdrawals | Virtual Card | My Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grey | ✓ Yes | 3/month | ✓ Included | ★ 4.5 / 5 |
| Geegpay | ✓ Yes | Unlimited | ✓ Included | ★ 4.3 / 5 |
| Vance | ✓ Yes | Paid only | ✓ Included | ★ 4.0 / 5 |
| Chipper Cash | ✓ Yes | 1/month | ✗ No | ★ 3.5 / 5 |
Grey remains the easiest to open, the most reliable for receiving international transfers, and the most usable for day-to-day dollar spending. Setup takes under 10 minutes with BVN verification. You get real US, UK, and Euro account details, which means US employers and clients can pay you like a local — no SWIFT fees, no intermediary banks eating your money.
Three free monthly withdrawals covers most users. After that, withdrawals cost about ₦3,500 flat — cheaper than the 3-5% banks charge on SWIFT. The exchange rate is transparent: what you see on the screen is what lands in your bank account.
If you withdraw more than three times a month, Geegpay’s unlimited free withdrawals make it the better pick. The interface is slightly less polished than Grey’s, but the underlying infrastructure is solid — payments land fast and the rate is competitive. Geegpay also gives you a virtual card for international subscriptions and online purchases.
Vance has the best-designed app of the four and a strong virtual card product, but free withdrawals are limited to one per month before fees kick in. For people who mostly want a dollar card for subscriptions rather than regular withdrawals, Vance is worth a look. For anyone receiving regular payments, the withdrawal limits hurt.
Chipper Cash is great for peer-to-peer transfers within its network, but as a dollar account it’s the weakest: one free withdrawal a month, no virtual card, and customer support that takes days to respond. If you already use Chipper for something else, keep it for that — don’t build your freelance payment flow on it.
Open Grey, verify it, and link your bank. Add Geegpay as backup if you start withdrawing more than three times a month. Skip the rest until they earn your money — these apps handle real cash, and “fine” isn’t good enough.
