After the SEC’s regulations on crypto exchanges in 2024, a lot of Nigerians assumed crypto was dead. It isn’t — but where and how you can trade legally changed. This is the current situation, what’s legal, what isn’t, and where Nigerians actually trade now.
Buying and holding crypto is legal in Nigeria. The clampdown targeted peer-to-peer (P2P) naira trading on foreign exchanges, not crypto itself. Today, the safest options are licensed Nigerian exchanges (like Roqqu) and holding in your own wallet. P2P still exists but carries real risk of account freezes.
In 2024, the government went after Binance and the P2P market — the channels used for naira-crypto trading. Bank accounts linked to P2P volume got frozen, several platforms delisted the naira, and the price of doing P2P quietly went up (wider spreads, more escrow fees).
What did NOT change: your right to own crypto, send it between your own wallets, or receive it from abroad. The CBN’s earlier bank ban on crypto transactions was lifted in December 2023 — banks can now work with licensed VASPs (Virtual Asset Service Providers).
Crypto gains are taxable in Nigeria (capital gains), and the government has made noise about taxing digital assets specifically. If you’re trading seriously, keep records: buy price, sell price, dates, and wallet addresses. Nobody wants to reconstruct a year of trades from memory during an audit.
Crypto isn’t illegal in Nigeria — unlicensed naira P2P is just risky. Use a licensed exchange to buy, move serious amounts to your own wallet, and treat P2P like the grey market it is. And never invest money you can’t afford to lose: crypto is a position, not a plan.
